National Treasure — 国粹

Sichuan Mahjong
The Definitive Guide

The complete textbook guide to Chengdu Bloody Battle to the End (成麻血战到底) — China's most explosive regional Mahjong variant.

Chengdu · Sichuan · China

Mahjong is far more than just a tabletop game — it is a profound Chinese national treasure (国粹, Guócuì). For generations, the clacking of Mahjong tiles has been the beating heart of Chinese family gatherings, Lunar New Year celebrations, and weekend social bonding. Learning Mahjong unlocks an extraordinary cultural bridge that brings family and friends roaring around a table, transforming quiet evenings into nights filled with laughter, friendly rivalry, and unforgettable memories.

Among all regional variations, Sichuan Mahjong(specifically the “Bloody Battle to the End” ruleset) is the absolute king in modern China.

Think of traditional Mahjong like a slow, strategic game of chess. Sichuan Mahjong is a high-speed, aggressive, no-holds-barred Battle Royale. It strips away all the tedious memorization and replaces it with pure offense, massive multipliers, and a game that never stops until the board is empty.

Below is the complete textbook guide to Sichuan Mahjong — starting with the Classic Mode that anyone can learn in minutes, followed by the Customizable Advanced Settings.

Part I: The Classic Mode

This is the standard ruleset played by tens of millions. It is simple, intuitive, and insanely fast.

The Core Golden Rules

The 108-Tile Deck

No Winds or Dragons

Traditional Mahjong has 144 tiles, including complex Winds and Dragons. Sichuan Mahjong deletes them entirely. You only play with three simple suits: Dots (Pin / 筒), Bamboo (Bams / 条), and Characters (Wan / 万) — numbered 1 through 9, with 4 copies each.

Void One Suit

Ding Que · 缺一门

You cannot win a hand if you possess all three suits. Before the first draw, every player chooses one suit to banish from their hand. If your final hand contains even a single tile of your voided suit, your hand is strictly invalid!

No Chows Allowed

Chi · 吃 is forbidden

You cannot steal a discard from an opponent to complete a sequence (e.g., 2-3-4). Sequences must be drawn entirely by your own luck! You can only steal tiles for Pongs (Triplets) or Kongs (Quads).

The Bloody Battle

No Game Over on First Win

When someone wins, they collect their payout, step away from the table, and the remaining three players keep fighting! The round only ends when three players have won, or the deck runs dry.

How the Game Begins & Plays

The Setup & Deal

  1. One player is randomly assigned as the Dealer (庄家). The Dealer receives 14 tiles.
  2. The other three players are Non-Dealers (闲家) and receive 13 tiles.
  3. Every player selects their Voided Suit (缺一门) — the suit they will banish.

The Gameplay Loop

Because the Dealer starts with 14 tiles, they take the very first action by discarding one tile face-up into the center river. Play then proceeds counter-clockwise:

① Draw 1 tile② Discard 1 tile

Stealing Discards

Pong (碰)

You hold a pair (e.g., two 7-Dots), and an opponent discards the 3rd 7-Dot. Yell “Pong!”, take the tile, place your Triplet face-up, and discard a tile.

Hu / Win (胡)

If an opponent discards the exact tile you need to complete your 14-tile hand (4 melds + 1 pair), yell “Hu!” and claim your victory!

“Wind and Rain” — Instant Cash for Kongs

Kong = Instant Cash Bounty (刮风下雨)

In Sichuan Mahjong, declaring a Kong (Four-of-a-Kind) is an Instant Cash Bounty. Opponents must pay you cash immediately on the spot, regardless of who wins the game later!

Exposed Kong

Wind · 明杠

You hold a hidden Triplet, and an opponent discards the 4th tile. You call "Kong".

💰 The discarder pays you 2× Base Stake immediately.

Added Kong

Small Rain · 加杠

You already have an open Pong on the table. You draw the 4th matching tile yourself and add it to the set.

💰 All 3 opponents pay you 1× Base Stake each.

Concealed Kong

Big Rain · 暗杠

You secretly draw all 4 identical tiles yourself and declare a hidden Kong — the most powerful Kong.

💰 All 3 opponents pay you 2× Base Stake each.

Essential Scoring & Hand Patterns

Exponential Multiplier System: 2^Fan

Sichuan Mahjong scoring uses an exponential multiplier system. Every Fan (番) you earn doubles your payout. A 3 Fan hand pays 8× the base stake. A 5 Fan hand pays 32×. Stack your Fans carefully!

The “Root” System (Gen / 根)

A “Root” is any set of four identical tiles in your winning hand (whether declared as a Kong or split across sequences/pairs). Every single Root adds +1 Fan — which literally doubles your final score.

Standard Hand Patterns

Ping Hu

0 Fan

平胡

A standard winning hand (mix of sequences and triplets). The baseline from which all other patterns build.

Self-Draw

+1 Fan

Zi Mo · 自摸

You draw your own winning tile instead of stealing a discard. Everyone pays you! This adds +1 Fan to whatever hand you have.

All Pongs

1 Fan

Dui Dui Hu · 对对胡

A hand composed entirely of Pongs/Kongs and one Pair. No sequences allowed — just pure triplets and quads.

Full Flush

2 Fan

Qing Yi Se · 清一色

A hand made entirely of a single suit (e.g., strictly Dots). One of the most coveted and powerful hands.

Seven Pairs

2 Fan

Qi Dui · 七对

A special hand made of exactly 7 pairs. No Pongs, no Kongs — just seven perfectly matched couples.

Dragon Seven Pairs

3 Fan

Long Qi Dui · 龙七对

A Seven Pairs hand containing 1 Root (four identical tiles). 2 Fan (Seven Pairs) + 1 Fan (Root) = 3 Fan. With 2 Roots, it becomes Double Dragon Seven Pairs (4 Fan).

Golden Hook

2 Fan

Jin Gou Diao · 金钩钓

You have called Pong/Kong four times, leaving you with only 1 tile in your hand. You draw or steal its exact match to win — a thrilling all-or-nothing finish.

💥 The Combo Stacking Mechanics

The true thrill of Sichuan Mahjong lies in Pattern Stacking. Hand patterns in Bloody Battle are fully additive— you don't just pick one pattern; you stack as many compatible patterns and Roots as possible to chase exponential multipliers!

Qing Dui

清对 · Full Flush All Pongs

3 Fan

Payout

Formula: Full Flush (2 Fan) + All Pongs (1 Fan)

A hand made entirely of Pongs/Kongs within a single suit. Clean, devastating, and deceptively achievable.

Qing Qi Dui

清七对 · Full Flush Seven Pairs

4 Fan

16× Payout

Formula: Full Flush (2 Fan) + Seven Pairs (2 Fan)

7 pairs, all belonging to the exact same suit. A hand of breathtaking elegance and crushing power.

Qing Long Dui

清龙七对 · Full Flush Dragon Seven Pairs

5 Fan

32× Payout

Formula: Full Flush (2 Fan) + Seven Pairs (2 Fan) + 1 Root (1 Fan)

A Full Flush Seven Pairs hand where four of the tiles are identical — forming 1 Root. The legendary dragon awakens.

Qing Jin Gou Diao

清金钩钓 · Full Flush Golden Hook

5 Fan

32× Payout

Formula: Full Flush (2 Fan) + Golden Hook (2 Fan) + All Pongs (1 Fan)

You called Pong/Kong 4 times within a single suit, winning with just 1 tile left in your hand. The ultimate all-or-nothing gambit.

💡 The Unlimited Stacking Rule

Roots (Gen), Self-Draw (Zi Mo), and Win-on-Kong (Gang Shang Hua) stack endlessly on top of any combination above! For example, a Qing Long Dui (5 Fan) with 2 extra Roots and a Self-Draw becomes an astounding 8 Fan (256× Base Payout)!

The End-Game Reckoning

Cha Da Jiao (查大叫) — Wall-Empty Judgment

When the wall runs out of tiles, the round ends. Anyone left in the game must face judgment. There is no escape — you will pay if you are unprepared!

The Void Penalty

Cha Hua Zhu · 查花猪

If you still hold even one tile of your voided suit, you are severely penalized and must pay the maximum possible score limitto all “Ready” players!

The Tenpai Check

Cha Da Jiao · 查大叫

If your hand is Not Ready (not 1 tile away from winning), you must calculate the maximum possible scorethat “Ready” players could have won if they drew their perfect tile, and pay them that amount directly!

Part II: Advanced & Optional Room Settings

When hosting a room, players can toggle these specialized settings to customize their gameplay experience.

Optional Toggle — Draft a Better Hand

Before declaring your voided suit, every player secretly selects 3 tiles of the same suit from their hand and passes them to an opponent (determined by a dice roll). This drafts better starting hands and accelerates the game!

When Player A discards a tile, Player B calls an Exposed Kong (Exposed Wind), draws a bonus replacement tile, and wins instantly (Gang Shang Hua). The room can be set to two liability modes:

Mode 1: Single Liability

Discarder Pays All · 点炮模式

  • Player A (who fed the Kong) pays for Big Rain PLUS the full winning Hu score.
  • The other two players only pay Small Rain. They do not pay for the Hu score.

Mode 2: Full Liability

Self-Draw Equivalent · 自摸模式

  • Player A pays for Big Rain PLUS the winning Hu score.
  • The other two players pay for Small Rain PLUS the winning Hu score (treating the win like a Self-Draw).

Zi Mo Jia Di · 自摸加底

Drawing your own winning tile adds a flat +1 Base Stake bonus. Simple and straightforward.

Zi Mo Jia Fan · 自摸加番

Drawing your own winning tile adds +1 Fan, literally doubling the entire payout! High risk, massive reward.

Heavenly Hand

Tian Hu · 天胡

The Dealer wins instantly on their initial 14 tiles — no draw, no discard, just pure celestial luck.

Earthly Hand

Di Hu · 地胡

A Non-Dealer wins on the Dealer's very first discard. Almost as rare as the Heavenly Hand.

All Terminals

Yao Jiu · 幺九

A hand composed entirely of 1s and 9s — only the extreme ends of each suit, in Pongs, Kongs, or Pairs.

General's Pongs

Jiang Dui · 将对

An "All Pongs" hand where every single tile is strictly a 2, 5, or 8. The general's favorite formation.

Collateral Damage

Ca Gua · 擦挂

When an Exposed Kong is declared, the discarder pays 2×, and the other two innocent bystanders must also pay 1× each as collateral damage!

Refunding the Rain

Tui Yu · 退雨

If you collected cash from a Kong early in the game, but end the game with a "Not Ready" hand, you must refund all your Kong money back to the table!

Call Forwarding

Hu Jiao Zhuan Yi · 呼叫转移

If you declare a Kong (collecting cash), but discard a tile that an opponent wins on, your Kong is voided and you must transfer all that Kong cash directly to the winner!
